The College of Saint Mary dance team ended its season Friday with an eighth-place finish at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Dance Championships.

The Flames scored a 59.97 during prelims (which is 25 percent of the total score) and 62.23 during the finals (75 percent of the total) for an overall score of 61.67.

The championships also served as an NAIA Regional Qualifier and the Flames took ninth in that competition.

Doane University won both the GPAC and the regional qualifier with a total score of 86.49.

"I'm incredibly proud of how far this team has come and how much we've overcome," CSM Coach April Allen said. "After losing a few athletes over winter break, the remaining dancers rose to the occasion and left everything out on the floor.

"Unfortunately, we had a couple deductions in finals that cost us a few places."

CSM dancer Carrie Keating (SO/Gretna, Neb.) agreed.

"After a long season of overcoming a lot, we scored better than we could've imagined even with injuries and had an amazing GPAC," Keating said.

Dancing for the last time for the Flames was senior Angela Valadez-Flores (SR/Omaha, Neb. ).

"I feel very positive about our season and have such love for these four athletes," Allen said. "It will be sad to lose Angela next season, but I'm already excited for 2023-2024."
